Zscaler Warns of Growing Mobile, IoT, and OT Threats in Latest Report
Security researchers raised concerns last year, warning Google about hundreds of fake apps that could potentially infect millions of users with malware. Zscaler's latest report, covering June 2023 to April 2024, highlights the growing threats in the mobile, IoT, and OT spheres.
Adware was the second most common malware, following only the notorious Facestealer, designed to steal Facebook credentials. Mobile banking malware and spyware also saw significant growth. India recorded the largest share of mobile attacks, followed by the US and Canada.
Avast detected the most cases of fake apps on Google Play during this period. Nearly half of the attacks were trojans, with the education sector experiencing a staggering 136% annual increase. Zscaler's report also emphasizes the enterprise threat from legacy and end-of-life operating systems on OT equipment.
The 'Tools' category was most abused by threat actors on the Play Store, with 48% of malware-infected apps. Joker malware was the most prevalent, accounting for nearly two-fifths of malicious apps. Over 200 malicious apps were discovered, with more than eight million installs.
The report underscores the urgent need for vigilance in the face of evolving threats. Enterprises and users alike must stay informed and proactive to protect against these growing digital threats.
