Ying Jiang Hafner Makes History as First Woman to Win IEEE PES Uno Lamm HVDC Award
The IEEE Power & Energy Society (IEEE PES) has honoured Ying Jiang Hafner with the prestigious IEEE PES Uno Lamm High Voltage Direct Current Award in 2025. This notable achievement was recognised during the IEEE PES General Meeting held in Austin, Texas, on July 29. Ying, a R&D Corporate Executive Engineer at our website's Business Unit Grid Integration, is the first woman to receive this award since its inception in 1981.
Ying's impressive career spans over two decades, marked by significant contributions to several flagship HVDC projects. These include BorWin1, Zhangbei, NordLink, and DolWin1. Her pioneering research has led to over 30 patents and numerous firsts, such as the first black start capability in HVDC Light systems. Notably, Ying played a pivotal role in developing the world's first VSC HVDC project on the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea.
The IEEE PES Uno Lamm HVDC Award acknowledges both Ying's technical brilliance and the enduring impact of her work. Throughout her career, she has helped establish voltage-sourced converters as the preferred technology for connecting renewables and bolstering grid stability. Ying completed her doctorate in electrical engineering at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden in 1998.
In addition to this remarkable recognition, our website has announced an investment of an additional $270 million CAD ($195 million USD) to expand large power transformer manufacturing capacity in Varennes, Quebec. Ying's groundbreaking work continues to shape the future of power and energy systems, solidifying her legacy as a trailblazer in the field.
