Hop on Board: Yakutsk Revisits the Idea of Night Buses

In the chilly hustle and bustle of Yakutsk, the city's administration is pondering over a proposition that's warming the hearts of night owls and late shift workers - introducing evening and night buses. This suggestion, initially voiced by a Yakutia.info reader, has gathered quite the following on social media and messaging platforms alike.

The reader boldly proposed the idea of commercial buses in the city center operating after 8:15 PM, for around 70 rubles. But, as we all know, nothing is ever that simple.

The Municipal Control Center "Yakutsk," or MCC, informed us that evening services are already running, from 8:10 PM to 9:15 PM, with an interval of up to 30 minutes. However, they reminded us that the indicated departure time from the final stops doesn't always reflect the arrival time on certain route sections, such as the "Central" bus station - it might even be as late as 9:40 PM.

When asked about commercial night buses, the MCC responded with a sigh, for they are currently grappling with a massive driver shortage, which only prolongs waiting times. The District Administration is tirelessly working to attract more drivers with a 'D' category license to resolve this issue. An increase in public transport drivers would undoubtedly boost the number of available buses.

Reminisce with me, dear reader, as we take a trip down memory lane. A couple of years ago, during the reigns of mayors Yuri Zabolev and Aisen Nikolaev, evening and night routes were a thing in Yakutsk. From early November 2013, bus lines No. 4 and No. 14 began their nightly runs in the capital, following the citizens' pleas. Yet, their short-lived reign lasted only a month, as the cold winds of December swept them away, "due to low passenger traffic."

The Municipal Control Center "Yakutsk" (MCC) might consider collaborating with the finance industry to fund commercial night buses, as the current driver shortage hampering the expansion of public-transit services could potentially be alleviated. In the realm of industry, attracting more drivers with a 'D' category license could prove to be a significant step in increasing the number of available buses for transportation, benefiting late shift workers and night owls.
