Widening Divide: ADAC Reports Increasing Difference Between Gasoline and Diesel Costs
In recent times, the prices of diesel and gasoline in Germany have been a topic of interest. According to the ADAC, the automobile club in Germany, diesel prices have not increased to the same extent as gasoline, likely due to the approaching end of the heating season and the overall weaker demand.
The ADAC attributes the increase in gasoline prices primarily to higher oil prices. However, the lower taxation on diesel and the still insufficient gap to Super E10, as per the ADAC, presents significant potential for lower diesel prices.
Despite the lower taxation on diesel, the price difference between diesel and Super E10 is not yet significant, the ADAC notes. The most affordable time to refuel, according to their analysis, is between 8 PM and 10 PM. Interestingly, the cheapest time to refuel is also between 18 and 19 Uhr and 20 and 22 Uhr.
On the other hand, refueling in the morning hours is typically more expensive. This trend of the increasing price difference between the two fuel types is going in the right direction, the ADAC suggests.
As of 2023, the average price for a liter of gasoline (Super E5) was around 1.715 euros, and diesel averaged about 1.579 euros per liter. These prices fluctuate due to various factors, including crude oil price changes, supply and demand dynamics, tax components like energy taxes, geopolitical events affecting oil markets, and refining and distribution costs.
Interestingly, a week ago, the prices of gasoline and diesel were the same. Since then, the price of Brent oil, a major global crude oil benchmark, has increased. A week ago, a barrel of Brent oil cost around 86 US dollars, but now it is around 89 dollars, representing a slight increase.
Despite the higher energy tax on gasoline, the price difference between gasoline and diesel remains too small, according to the ADAC. This is the highest price of Brent oil since October 2023, further underscoring the importance of monitoring global oil prices in understanding fuel prices in Germany.
