White Horse Hotel Revitalization Approved After Years of Delays
Plans for reviving the long-abandoned White Horse Hotel in Wincanton have finally been given the green light by South Somerset District Council. The hotel, which has been empty since 2015, will be transformed into 13 modern flats with a commercial unit. The project has been a long time coming, with previous regeneration plans scaled back in 2022.
The White Horse Hotel's redevelopment has faced several hurdles. It was initially part of the council's Wincanton regeneration programme, but this was scaled back in 2022. The hotel's poor condition has also posed safety concerns, with parts of the building falling into the road. Councillor Colin Winder has been vocal about the need to reconstruct the building for safety reasons.
The project was further delayed when all remaining regeneration schemes in Wincanton were paused in January 2023 due to financial issues with the new unitary Somerset Council. Despite these setbacks, the project has now moved forward. The developer, White Hive Ltd, has not yet revealed what type of business will occupy the commercial unit. However, it has been confirmed that the building will be converted into 13 one and two-bedroom flats.
The redevelopment of the White Horse Hotel is set to bring new life to the historic building and the wider Wincanton area. The local authority previously committed £2m towards the town's regeneration, and it is hoped that this project will help to revitalise the community. While the specific plans for the commercial unit remain unclear, the project is expected to create new housing and potentially boost local business.
