Metrorail has announced service changes for the weekend of Sept. 20-21, due to scheduled maintenance work. Here's what you need to know:

  1. The maintenance work will take place from Saturday, 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., and Sunday, 6 a.m. to midnight.
  2. During this period, there will be no service to New Carrollton on the Silver Line. Passengers are advised to plan alternative routes.
  3. The maintenance work includes tie replacement on the Red Line and third rail maintenance on the Orange and Silver Lines.
  4. On the Red Line, trains will operate every 8 minutes during the day and every 10 minutes in the evening between Shady Grove and Union Station. However, at Judiciary Square, one track will be closed, resulting in trains arriving every 16 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes after 9:30 p.m.
  5. Free shuttle buses will replace trains between Union Station and Rhode Island Avenue, with NoMa-Gallaudet U station closed. Passengers are encouraged to consider boarding at nearby Gallery Place for shorter wait times.
  6. On the Red Line, normal service frequencies will be maintained between Rhode Island Avenue and Glenmont.
  7. Both the Green and Yellow Lines will maintain normal service.
  8. On the Orange Line, trains will single-track between Cheverly and New Carrollton, operating every 18 minutes between Vienna and New Carrollton.
  9. The Silver Line will see trains running every 12 minutes during the day and every 15 minutes after 9:30 p.m. between Ashburn and Downtown Largo.
  10. The Blue Line will run at approximately normal service, though some trips may depart slightly earlier or later than scheduled.
  11. On the Red Line, maintenance work also includes tie replacement, as previously mentioned.
  12. Third rail maintenance is part of the maintenance work on the Orange and Silver Lines, as previously mentioned.
  13. The exact waiting times at each Metrorail station on the Red Line during maintenance from Sept. 20 to 21 are not publicly detailed; passengers are advised to expect extended travel times and check local transit updates.
  14. The service changes will affect several lines due to the scheduled maintenance work.
  15. On the Blue Line, the trips may depart slightly earlier or later than scheduled, but the service will be approximately normal.
  16. The Orange Line will operate every 18 minutes between Vienna and New Carrollton due to single-tracking between Cheverly and New Carrollton.
