Walmart, Amazon Top Kantar's 2025 U.S. Retailers List; Shifts Below

The Kantar's 2025 Top 100 Retailers list, based on 2024 U.S. sales, reveals shifts in the retail landscape. Walmart maintains its No. 1 position, while Amazon holds steady at No. 2. The top 13 companies remain unchanged, but there's movement among the rest, influenced by factors like pet ownership trends and store expansions.

Walmart continues to dominate, reporting $568.70 billion in U.S. retail sales, a 7% increase. Amazon follows with $273.66 billion, up 9%. The top 13 companies retain their spots, but the rest see changes. Signet Jewelers (No. 69) and Best Buy (No. 18) both experienced a 5% decline in U.S. retail sales, leading to a drop in their rankings. Target, however, slipped only one place to No. 8, allowing Walgreens Boots Alliance to move up to No. 7.

Rite Aid's performance was particularly challenging. It fell from No. 29 to No. 40 due to a significant 22% decline in U.S. sales and a 25.5% decrease in U.S. stores. Meanwhile, Dollar General (No. 17) expanded its U.S. stores by 3% and grew U.S. sales by 5%, outpacing Dollar Tree (No. 19).

In the pharmacy sector, the 2025 list shows stability among the world's largest chains. Phoenix Group and Müller Holding maintain their leading positions in Europe, with strong financial performances in the 2023/2024 and 2025/2026 fiscal years. Müller's solid equity ratio, EBIT, and net profit reflect its robust financial health.

The 2025 Top 100 Retailers list indicates that while the top 13 companies maintain their positions, there's significant movement among the rest. The retail sector's performance is influenced by various factors, including sales growth, store expansions, and market trends like post-pandemic pet ownership levels. Despite the changes, Walmart and Amazon continue to lead the U.S. retail market.
