Waffle House eliminates its egg charge from dishes.
In a welcome relief for customers, Waffle House, the popular American restaurant chain operating over 2,000 restaurants, has announced the removal of a 50-cent egg surcharge from its menu. This decision comes after a significant drop in egg prices, following a severe bird flu outbreak that had caused prices to soar earlier this year.
The egg surcharge, introduced in February 2025, was a necessary response to the skyrocketing costs of eggs. However, the price of eggs began to fall in the spring of 2025, dropping by 12.7% in April, with a dozen large white-shell eggs now costing less than $3. This decline in prices, according to reports, was influenced by a coordinated effort led by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, who implemented a five-pronged strategy to improve biosecurity on farms and lower egg prices on grocery store shelves.
Waffle House made the announcement in a social media post on Tuesday, effective from June 2, 2025. The chain, known for its breakfast offerings, serves approximately 272 million eggs per year, making eggs their most-ordered item. The removal of the surcharge means that customers can now enjoy their favourite dishes without the extra cost.
The price drop has brought some relief not only to Waffle House customers but also to families across the nation. With the surcharge now a thing of the past, the strategy implemented by US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins seems to be a step in the right direction towards stabilising egg supply and prices.
