Vietnamese telecom giant, Viettel, pours a billion dollars into two significant national development endeavors.
Vietnam's leading tech group, Viettel, is set to expand its footprint with two significant projects: the An Khanh Data Centre and the Viettel Research and Development Centre.
The An Khanh Data Centre, a separate project from the Viettel Research and Development Centre, will be located on a 2.9 hectare site and is expected to be the largest data centre in the North. The project, which will require an investment of VND17.5 trillion ($700 million), is slated for completion in 2030. Phase 1 of the An Khanh Data Centre will be operational from the second quarter of 2026. The project will adhere to international standards in design and operation, integrating smart, green, and sustainable elements.
By 2030, the An Khanh Data Centre is expected to be upgraded to Viettel's second hyperscale data centre.
Meanwhile, the Viettel Research and Development Centre, scheduled for completion in 2030, will be based at the Hoa Lac High-Tech Park and will cover 13 hectares. The centre is expected to cost VND10 trillion ($400 million). This project coincides with Vietnam's National Day (September 2).
Viettel's commitment to technological advancement is evident in its recent collaborations. On August 14, Viettel signed an agreement with South Korea's KT to advance AI transformation in Southeast Asia. The agreement encourages the application of AI and AI transformation (AX) in the region. A similar deal was signed with Korea Telecom on May 26, aiming to enhance Vietnam's technological competitiveness in the region.
The efforts of Viettel are paying off, as evidenced by its Q2 2025 net profit of $91.14 million. In addition, Viettel Global (VGI) won top honours at global technology awards.
The Tan Phu Trung Data Centre and Viettel Danang, projects completed by Viettel in 2025, have contributed to the completion of modern infrastructure networks and supported the goals of national defense development and digital transformation in Vietnam.
These ambitious projects underscore Viettel's commitment to driving technological advancement and digital transformation in Vietnam, positioning the company as a key player in the region.
