A suspected arson attack on a switchgear cabinet of the German Railway in Lehrte near Hannover has caused significant disruptions to both local and long-distance train traffic. The incident occurred on Friday, and it wasn't until Monday that long-distance trains on the important east-west connection between Hannover and Berlin could run again without detours and delays in both directions.

The fire, which destroyed the switchgear cabinet and the cable system, took place near the signal box. Investigations suggest that the fire was set intentionally, but currently, there are no suspects in connection with the incident, as stated by the police spokesman in Hannover. No claim of responsibility has been received regarding the incident.

The specific location of the incident is Lehrte near Hannover. The fuse box, which was located about two kilometers away from the signal box, was also affected by the fire. The criminal investigation department secured traces and took the entire cabinet to examine it.

The fire caused significant disruptions to train traffic, with more than 250 trains of local, long-distance, and freight traffic being delayed. The police is analysing traces found at the scene of the incident and encouraging tips from witnesses.

No motive for the incident has been determined so far, according to the spokesman. The police is urging anyone with information that could help in the investigation to come forward. As the investigation continues, the public is asked to remain patient as the authorities work to restore normal train services.
