Residents of the Volga Federal District tend to make impulse buys, with a quarter of them indulging several times a week and 45% doing so once a week, as per a VTB survey on Russian consumer habits. And it seems that, much like around the world, these spontaneous purchases often lead to regret, especially when it comes to clothing, shoes, and accessories, with close to half of the respondents confessing to this (48% if we're rounding up).
Digging deeper into the survey findings, it appears that Volga residents are not always wise with their subscriptions and online services. Over one fifth (21%) of them have budgeted funds towards these questionable expenditures. Interestingly, when it comes to gadgets and electronics, the residents show a more thoughtful approach, with a smaller percentage (only 11%) admitting to impulse buys in this category.
Looking at the amount spent on these regrettable purchases, most respondents (88%) fall in the 1,000 to 15,000 rubles bracket. A hard-earned sum, indeed.
Managing expenses has proven to be a priority for most respondents, with 64% attempting to control their spending, though their efforts are sometimes unsuccessful. Half of the surveyed Volga residents create a shopping list before their spending spree, and 40% take a moment to consider the necessity of their purchase before reaching for their wallet. 24% of respondents even set a spending limit and stick to it, ensuring they don't break the bank.
The survey was carried out from April 4 to 10, with a representative sample of 1,500 Russians aged 18 to 65 in cities with a population of over 100,000.
In terms of what else might be prompting regret, one can look to historical trends. Given the Volga Federal District's economic conditions and costs, it's possible that impulsive purchases of pricier items like cars or indulgent electronics don't always stand the test of time. And while tourist trinkets may not be as prevalent in today's consumer landscape, extravagant or luxury items that overshoot an individual's real need or value might still leave a sour taste in one's mouth. But without specific data on the Volga Federal District's residents, it's difficult to narrow down the exact percentage of people who regret these impulse buys. As with most things in life, the likelihood of regret often boils down to personal financial circumstances, preferences, and the quality of post-purchase satisfaction.
