UK Pub Industry and Workers Battle Alcohol Issues, 300 Pubs at Risk
The UK's pub industry and workers are grappling with alcohol-related issues at work. More than 300 pubs are at risk of closure by the end of the year due to financial struggles. Meanwhile, only 45 per cent of workers report receiving guidance on alcohol at work events from their employers.
The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has highlighted the impact of workplace drinking on productivity. They suggest setting a minimum unit price on alcohol and increasing alcohol duty above inflation to tackle the issue. According to IPPR, nearly half of young professionals call in sick due to workplace drinking.
Rachel Reeves, the Shadow Chancellor, is being urged to introduce fresh alcohol levies in the upcoming Budget. The European Union is also discussing changes to alcohol taxes. However, the hospitality sector opposes these proposed tax hikes, citing existing cost pressures.
Employers are seen as not doing enough to address workplace drinking culture. Most workers believe employers have a responsibility to reduce alcohol harm at work. With over 300 pubs at risk of closure, the industry and workers await the outcome of the Budget and EU discussions on alcohol taxes.
