UK government gives green light to £290 million M3 motorway upgrading project
The M3 J9 scheme, located in South Hampshire, is a significant part of a larger investment in UK transportation infrastructure. This scheme is focused on improving the efficiency and safety of a specific junction on the M3 motorway, with a budget of £290m, as confirmed by the UK Department for Transport (DfT).
The investment is a strategic move aimed at renewing long-neglected national infrastructure. The M3 J9 scheme is expected to support the construction of 2,000 homes and unlock the true potential of UK ports for economic growth.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper approved the investment for the M3 J9 scheme. The new design will improve safety by extending the southbound slip road onto the M3, providing more time for traffic to join the motorway.
The M3 J9 scheme is intended to improve traffic flow on the M3 motorway near Winchester. It is estimated to reduce frustration for anyone using this junction, according to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander. The government's investment in infrastructure projects is not limited to road schemes, as it is also investing in sustainable infrastructure projects.
The M3 J9 scheme is expected to save thousands of hours for commuters, tourists, and freight every week. Peak time journeys through the junction to the A272 into Winchester are estimated to be 30% faster.
The UK government's investment in road schemes with significant economic benefits is evident, having so far invested half a billion pounds for 6 schemes across England. The M3 J9 scheme is one of these investments, aimed at delivering 1.5 million homes in this Parliament.
The M3 J9 scheme, along with other road schemes, is part of the UK government's plan to deliver 1.5 million homes in this Parliament. The A47 road scheme has also been approved, with a £200m investment.
The fourth annual CiTTi Awards will take place on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London, celebrating achievements and innovations in sustainable infrastructure projects. While the CiTTi Awards are an unmissable event for the UK's transportation sector, they are not directly related to the M3 J9 scheme.
