UAE Completes Nuclear Power Expansion with Barakah Unit 4
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched its fourth and final nuclear reactor, the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant Unit 4. This marks a significant milestone in the country's clean energy transition. The plant, built by Korean utility company Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), began commercial operation this week. This follows the successful start-up of Units 1, 2, and 3 in 2020 and 2021. In a sign of growing international cooperation, KHNP's chief executive, Whang Joo-ho, met with Westinghouse officials in 2021 to discuss a potential joint venture. This underscores the UAE's commitment to expanding its nuclear power capabilities. With all four units now operational, the Barakah plant will generate up to 25% of the UAE's electricity needs. This significant addition to the country's clean energy mix is expected to reduce its carbon emissions and enhance energy security.
