Typhoon Bualoi Floods Hà Nội: Commuters Abandon Vehicles, Streets Paralyzed
Hanoi residents faced a challenging evening commute as Typhoon Bualoi brought severe flooding, leading to gridlock and many commuters abandoning their vehicles. The city recorded 82 flooded hotspots and over 366mm of rainfall, surpassing the drainage system's capacity.
Heavy rain overwhelmed Hanoi's drainage system, designed to handle only 310mm in 48 hours. Major thoroughfares like Nguyen Chinh Di, Truong Chinh, Nguyen Hong, and Nguyen Huy Tuong were paralyzed, with commuters walking home through knee-high water. Vu Thu Trang, an office worker, walked for half an hour with her children, while Tran Thu Hang covered over 6km. Nguyen Ngoc Diep took two and a half hours to travel just 5km. Several schools allowed pupils to stay overnight due to flooded streets. Many workers spent the night at their workplaces due to impassable streets. The local Civil Defense forces, coordinated with the Disaster Prevention and Search & Rescue Command Committee, were responsible for preparing and controlling the evacuation of residents. Beyond Hanoi, provinces across the north and central regions, including Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai, Lao Cai, and Thanh Hoa, were heavily affected by flooding and landslides.
