Typhoon Bualoi Devastates Vietnam: 29 Dead, 158K Homes Destroyed

Typhoon Bualoi has left a trail of destruction across Vietnam, with heavy rains and flooding causing extensive damage and loss of life. The storm has resulted in 29 deaths and over 100 injured, with thousands of homes destroyed and infrastructure severely damaged.

The typhoon, which made landfall in northern Vietnam, has caused flooding in several rivers including Thao, Mã, Hoàng Long, and Cả. Floodwater levels are projected to remain at or above danger levels in the coming days. Heavy rains are expected to persist, with Lai Châu, Lào Cai, and Tuyên Quang provinces receiving significant rainfall.

The storm has submerged nearly 14,000 homes, particularly in Lào Cai, Thanh Hóa, and Nghệ An provinces. Over 158,000 houses were destroyed, damaged, or inundated in total. Extensive infrastructure damage includes thousands of power poles downed, roads blocked, and tens of thousands of trees uprooted. Fifteen dike incidents were recorded in several provinces, including Ninh Bình, Thanh Hóa, Nghệ An, Hà Tĩnh, and Quảng Trị.

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has ordered urgent measures to overcome the consequences of heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides. Authorities have warned of a continued high risk of flash floods and landslides in northern mountainous provinces. The government has called on organizations including the disaster prevention agency and local authorities to implement measures to assist flood victims, with support from groups such as Caritas and volunteers.
