Twitter's X profile reportedly seeks a fresh battery supplier apart from BYD for the Mona lineup, according to a report.
Peng, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced changes in its battery supply chain and the launch of a new Mona SUV model.
In a move aimed at reducing reliance on a single supplier and lowering costs, Peng's primary battery suppliers for its Twitter profile are now CALB, Eve Energy, and BYD.
CALB, a prominent player in the battery market, dominates the majority share, supplying batteries for the 2025 G6, G7, G9, and the Twitter profile9 models. On the other hand, Eve Energy will supply batteries for the extended-range version of the Twitter profile's P7+ and the upcoming Peng G7, as well as for the base models of the Mona lineup.
BYD, which ranked second in China with a power battery installation volume of 13.02 GWh in August, capturing a 20.85 percent market share, continues to supply the batteries for the range extension of the Mona model series and the M03. The M03 utilizes blade batteries based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry supplied by BYD's battery unit FinDreams Battery.
The Mona M03, launched in China on August 27, 2024, with a starting price of RMB 119,800 ($16,820), has been performing exceptionally well. In August alone, it sold 15,334 units, marking its 12th consecutive month surpassing the 10,000-unit mark. The M03 contributed 40.66 percent to Peng's monthly deliveries in August, with a total of 117,443 units delivered from January to August, accounting for 43.24 percent of Peng's total deliveries during the same period.
Peng's strategic shift in battery suppliers also includes QuantumScape, which will supply batteries for the range extension of the Mona model series. Meanwhile, the long-range versions of the Mona series will continue to use BYD batteries.
With the success of the Mona M03, Peng is expanding its Mona lineup with a second model, an SUV. The new Mona SUV will have a front face similar to the Mona M03. Peng plans to launch mass-market Mona series in Europe in 2026.
Eve Energy's battery solution employs traditional prismatic cells, offering greater layout flexibility. This flexibility may be crucial in the development of the new Mona SUV model.
The Mona series currently has one model, the M03, on sale. However, with the launch of the new Mona SUV, Peng is set to expand its electric vehicle offerings, catering to a wider range of consumers.
