Türkiye, Saudi Arabia Strengthen Ties with Defense, Economic, and Diplomatic Cooperation
Türkiye and Saudi Arabia have significantly bolstered their relations, with enhanced cooperation in defense, economics, and diplomacy. This comes as Saudi Arabia asserts itself as a regional power, with ambitious plans for domestic defense production and mediation efforts.
Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 strategy has driven its interest in producing unmanned aerial vehicles domestically. A notable step was the signing of an agreement with Baykar for the export of Bayraktar Akıncı UCAVs, Baykar's largest export contract to date.
The defense cooperation extends to technology transfer and joint production. Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) has inked agreements with Turkish defense companies in land systems, electronics, and space technologies. Meanwhile, there's speculation about a potential order of up to 100 KAAN fighter jets from Saudi Arabia, though this is yet to be confirmed.
In the realm of diplomacy, Saudi Arabia has taken a more active role. Following Oct. 7, it has mediated in regional conflicts. The Gaza contact group, formed under Saudi leadership within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has emerged as a central platform for conflict resolution. Additionally, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye are working together to prevent instability in the Middle East.
Türkiye and Saudi Arabia's strengthened ties, particularly in defense and diplomacy, signal a new era of cooperation. Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 has propelled it to become a regional power, with ambitious plans for domestic defense production and mediation efforts. The two nations are expected to continue working together to maintain regional stability.
