Transport Minister Rejects High-Speed Rail Contract Amendments

Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has rejected proposals to amend the contract for a high-speed rail project management linking Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao airports. The project, delayed for over six years, has sparked negotiations over contractual revisions.

Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn opposes any changes that violate the original contract or the law. He stated, 'I will not endorse anything that violates the contract or the law'. The minister believes that shifting to a 'build-as-you-go' or instalment-based payment model, as proposed, contradicts the initial terms. He also doubts that such amendments would gain cabinet approval.

In light of these issues, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn plans to discuss the project's future with key stakeholders. This includes Asia Era One Co, Ltd, the Eastern Economic Corridor Policy Committee, and the State Railway of Thailand. If the high-speed rail project cannot proceed as planned, alternatives such as expanding the double-track railway and increasing train frequency may be considered.

The high-speed rail project's future remains uncertain due to ongoing negotiations over contractual revisions. Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn's stance against proposed amendments may lead to alternative transportation solutions being explored.
