Trains have resumed service between Munich and Holzkirchen.

After a brief closure due to damaged sleepers on seven switches in the Deisenhofen and Unterhaching area, the railway line between Munich and Holzkirchen has been successfully reopened. The resumption of service was announced by Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB).

The closure, which affected both the S3 line and regional trains, had caused frustration among commuters, students, and day-trippers south of Munich. However, DB InfraGO temporarily installed straight tracks in Unterhaching to make the line usable quicker, and buses and large taxis were used to bridge the gap.

Safety remains a top priority at Deutsche Bahn. The switch repairs at Deisenhofen station were completed by DB InfraGO, allowing the entire line to reopen for train traffic. The S-Bahn trains on line S3 will resume regular service at around 3:30 pm, while Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) will be back with its full service from Friday.

Criticism over the closure and the replacement rail service was directed towards various parties, including passenger representatives and Bavarian Minister of Transport Christian Bernreiter (CSU). Munich County also expressed criticism over the situation.

It is worth noting that regulations for concrete sleepers have been reviewed and tightened following a train derailment in Garmisch-Partenkirchen three years ago, resulting in five fatalities.

At present, the full reopening of the line and the resumption of regular service for all trains are still being monitored and managed by Deutsche Bahn. No specific reopening date for full service has been confirmed, but the aim is to restore operations as soon as safely possible.

In the wake of the closure, discussions have arisen about the need for improved infrastructure in the public-transit industry, particularly in the area of finance for transportation projects. This incident serves as a reminder of the crucial role that the industry plays in facilitating daily commuting, and the potential consequences of inadequate maintenance.

With the successful reopening of the Munich-Holzkirchen line, attention now shifts to implementing long-term solutions for preserving the durability of infrastructure, such as railways and switches, in order to minimize future disruptions and ensure the safety and efficiency of the system. This reevaluation may also impact the sourcing and implementation of sleepers for the railway, following the stringent regulations enforced after the tragic derailment in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
