After an extended six week hiatus, the swift railway trail between Mannheim and Stuttgart is back in action! 🌟 The conclusion of tunnel renovation works at Freudenstein near Knittlingen (Enzkreis) has been achieved on schedule, and the authorities confirm the resumption of services without restrictions.
The rail trail has been under closure since Easter, impacting numerous commuters with elongated travel times and cancellations. Consequently, long-distance, local and freight trains were rerouted, and some connections were also discontinued. However, passenger association Pro Bahn reported no formal complaints regarding the closure. The railway spokesperson highlights that their alternate plans effectively addressed the situation. 🌟
In the past months, the geology within the approximately seven-kilometer-long Freudenstein tunnel posed issues in the course of traveling near Knittlingen (Enzkreis). The tunnel was weaving through rocks containing anhydrite, which expanded due to excessive water influx, sometimes causing cracks in the tunnel structure.
To mend this issue, the railway had plans to install enhancing features, such as wire meshes for securing a segment of 1,000 meters of tunnel ceiling. The estimated costs encircled approximately 7.5 million euros.
