New York City Braces for Gridlock Alert Days During UN General Assembly
New York City is gearing up for a series of Gridlock Alert Days, with a total of 20 days scheduled between now and mid-December, as announced by the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT). The UN General Assembly, taking place from Sept. 22 to 26 in Midtown, is expected to cause severe traffic congestion, leading to extensive street closures and delays.
The city strongly urges anyone heading into the five boroughs to use public transportation instead. Street closures and delays can cause traffic to slow to under 4 mph during Gridlock Alert Days. City DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez has stated that New York City welcomes the UN General Assembly but urges everyone to minimize congestion and seek non-driving modes of transportation.
To help alleviate traffic, the city's Department of Transportation has expanded bike lanes across Manhattan and bikers can use the protected bike lane in the First Avenue Tunnel to bypass crowded intersections near the UN headquarters. Anyone driving in Midtown next week is advised to pack a snack and a sleeping bag due to long traffic delays.
In addition to the days already mentioned, the remaining Gridlock Alert Days this year include: Monday, Sept. 22, Tuesday, Sept. 23, Wednesday, Sept. 24, Thursday, Sept. 25, Friday, Sept. 26, Wednesday, Nov. 19, Thursday, Nov. 20, Tuesday, Nov. 25, Wednesday, Dec. 3, Thursday, Dec. 4, Friday, Dec. 5, Monday, Dec. 8, Tuesday, Dec. 9, Wednesday, Dec. 10, Thursday, Dec. 11, Friday, Dec. 12, Monday, Dec. 15, Tuesday, Dec. 16, and Wednesday, Dec. 17. Gridlock Alert Days are scheduled to continue until mid-December.
The city's Department of Transportation continues to upgrade crosstown and avenue bus routes to provide a smoother commute for those using public transportation. The city has declared the return of "Gridlock Alert Days" during the UN General Assembly, marking the start of these 20 days of increased traffic congestion.
As the city prepares for the UN General Assembly and the subsequent Gridlock Alert Days, residents and visitors are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly and consider using public transportation or alternative modes of transportation to avoid the gridlock and delays.
