Traffic Alert: Delays on A46 for motorists to anticipate.

The Autobahn GmbH has announced a closure of the Sonnborner Kreuz on the A46 near Wuppertal from Friday, 25th July, at 9 PM, lasting until Monday, 28th July at 5 AM. This closure, which was announced due to more severe damage to the bridge than initially anticipated, will cause delays in travel over the A46 and affect journeys towards Dortmund and Düsseldorf.

During the closure, traffic in the direction of Dortmund will be at a standstill between the exit to the L418/Cronenberg and the Wuppertal-Sonnborn motorway junction. In the other direction (Düsseldorf), the plan remains unchanged: The A46 will be closed between the Wuppertal-Sonnborn and Haan-Ost junctions from Friday evening.

For those traveling over or near the A46 around Wuppertal during the closure of the Sonnborner Kreuz, here are some alternative routes to consider:

1. **Use the A535 as a Detour**: Drivers can take the A535 as an alternative route. From the west, exit the A46 earlier before Sonnborner Kreuz and follow signs to the A535, which runs parallel to parts of the A46 and can help bypass the closure. The A535 reconnects with the A46 further east, allowing you to continue your journey with minimal delay.

2. **City Roads and Local Bypass**: Depending on your starting point and destination, local roads such as the B7 and B224 can serve as alternatives. These roads run through Wuppertal and neighboring towns, but expect slower speeds and possible congestion during peak times.

3. **From East to West or vice versa via A1 or A43**: If your journey involves longer distances, consider rerouting via the A1 or A43 highways, which intersect with the A46 at different points. These routes might add extra kilometers but help avoid closures and heavy traffic near the Sonnborner Kreuz.

4. **Public Transport Options**: Wuppertal has a well-developed public transport network, including the Wuppertal Schwebebahn, buses, and trains, which might offer viable alternatives, especially for local trips.

In addition to these alternative routes, travelers are advised to check real-time traffic updates via navigation apps or local traffic news to adapt their route based on congestion. Allow extra travel time during the closure, and follow all detour signs posted on highways around Wuppertal.

Those traveling from Düsseldorf towards Wuppertal and Dortmund will need to take the A535 exit to Velbert and then rejoin the A46, causing significant congestion.

The closure is scheduled to end on Monday morning (28th July) at 5 AM. Stay informed and plan your journey accordingly to ensure a smooth trip during this closure.

  1. The closure on the A46 near Wuppertal, affecting journeys towards Dortmund and Düsseldorf, has caused a need for alterative transportation methods, such as the use of the A535.
  2. For car maintenance, drivers might want to avoid the A46 during the closure and consider using local roads like the B7 and B224, which might provide slower speeds but avoid congestion in some areas.
  3. Given the closure of Sonnborner Kreuz, those traveling from east to west (or vice versa) may opt for longer routes via the A1 or A43 highways, which intersect with the A46 at different points.
  4. For those who prefer public transit, Wuppertal has a well-developed public transport network, including the Wuppertal Schwebebahn, buses, and trains, which can serve as alternative transportation options for local trips, especially during the A46 closure.
