Toyota Presents Group Vision: Chairman Toyoda Affirms Leadership Role in Transformative Endeavor

The Toyota Group, a global leader in the automotive industry, has announced its new vision for the company's future direction. Titled "Inventing our path forward, together," this vision emphasizes collaboration, technological innovation, sustainability, and inclusion to create a safer, more connected, and sustainable mobility future.

The journey of Toyota began in 1895 with the establishment of Toyoda Shoten, founded by Sakichi Toyoda. His invention of the Toyoda wooden hand loom in 1890 laid the foundation for the company's focus on innovation. The lineage extended horizontally through alliances with companies that have unique aspects and strengths.

In the 21st century, the Toyota Group faced challenges, notably during the 2008 financial crisis and global recalls that caused inconvenience to many and led to a loss of trust from customers. However, Chairman Akio Toyoda took full responsibility for the past, present, and future of the Group during the recalls in 2009.

Fast forward to today, Chairman Akio Toyoda has decided to answer questions about the Group's vision. The new vision is centered on co-creation and collaboration, bringing diverse participants together to invent and test mobility and lifestyle innovations in a living community. This approach includes technological innovation across multiple areas, such as electrification, connectivity, and new mobility services.

Sustainability and inclusion are also key aspects of the vision. The Toyota Group aims to pursue carbon neutrality, accessible and inclusive mobility solutions, and contribute to broader goals such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and "Mobility for All." The goal is to provide freedom of movement and happiness for all people.

This path forward emphasizes a future shaped collectively by people, technology, and communities working in harmony to forge new pathways that improve quality of life and the environment. The shared vision is the core of how Toyota will create value going forward.

The Toyota Group's new vision was initially scheduled to be shared on February 14 but was brought forward due to the recent situation of Group companies. A press conference was held on January 30 at the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology in Nagoya, attended by chairmen, presidents, and frontline leaders of Toyota Group companies.

The vision's formulation is detailed in a press release, and one of its most notable initiatives is the Toyota Woven City, a real-world testbed where Toyota and a growing community of partners, startups, and researchers co-create new ways of living and moving, integrating advanced technologies and human-centered solutions to address societal challenges.

The Toyota Group's resilience is evident, as it has rebuilt itself and can once again be called a carmaker. Chairman Akio Toyoda considers Toyota to have collapsed during the 2008 financial crisis. However, the new vision and attitudes set forth by Chairman Toyoda serve as a testament to the company's determination to learn from its past and forge ahead towards a sustainable and inclusive future.

Many companies in the parts, steel, rubber, and electronics industries have started following in Toyota's footsteps, demonstrating the far-reaching impact of the company's vision and commitment to innovation. The Toyota Group's vision, "Inventing our path forward, together," is a call to action for the entire industry to work together towards a better, more sustainable future.

  1. The Toyota Group's new vision, titled "Inventing our path forward, together," encompasses a business strategy that emphasizes leadership in technology, finance, and sustainability, aiming to create a collaborative environment for co-creation and mobility innovations.
