Toyota, Lexus Thefts Surge as Thieves Exploit CAN-BUS Vulnerability
Thieves are exploiting a vulnerability in the CAN-BUS systems of certain Toyota and Lexus models, leading to a surge in thefts across the UK. The perpetrators remain unidentified, and manufacturers' security measures have proven insufficient.
The thefts involve manipulating the CAN-BUS system, allowing thieves to start engines without a key. This has resulted in a significant increase in wiring loom replacements, with costs exceeding £11,000 per vehicle. Repairify UK has identified this rising trend.
Robert Neale, Workshop Operations Manager at Repairify UK, highlights the substantial impact on insurers, bodyshops, and vehicle owners. He notes that full wiring loom replacements and vehicle write-offs are not the only solutions, contrary to common practice. Repairify advises workshops to consider alternative repair methods.
The CAN-BUS system manipulations in Toyota and Lexus models have led to a costly theft epidemic in the UK. Despite manufacturers' efforts, thieves continue to breach security systems. Repairify UK urges workshops to explore alternative repair options to mitigate financial losses.
