Togg boosts T10X costs post Electric Vehicle tax modifications in Turkey

In a recent development, Turkish domestic EV brand Togg has announced a price increase for its T10X models, following the Turkish government's tax reform. The changes are a result of the new Special Consumption Tax (OTV) regulations, which have significantly increased tax rates for electric vehicles (EVs) in Türkiye [1][3].

The OTV rate for electric cars has been raised from as low as 10% to a minimum of 25%, with rates climbing up to 75% for higher value models. This has led to substantial price hikes for Togg's T10X and other EVs, directly impacting their retail prices and potentially affecting demand [1][2].

For Togg's T10X, a locally produced electric vehicle, the tax base threshold for EVs with motor power below 160 kW was increased from 1,450,000 TL to 1,650,000 TL. However, the increase in SCT rates means that the final price of Togg's T10X models has nonetheless risen [1][3].

The V2 Long Range model of Togg's T10X lineup has experienced a 25.7% price increase, with the starting price now at ₺1,862,000 ($45,806). Similarly, the V1 Long Range and V1 Standard trims have also seen price increases [2]. The top model of T10X now costs ₺2,363,000 after a price hike of ₺483,000.

Despite the price increases, Togg continues to dominate Türkiye's EV market, having sold 3,098 units in June and 17,101 units in 2022 so far. The brand has reached a lifetime total of 66,777 units [2]. Togg leads in both electric and ICE SUV segments in Türkiye.

The revised OTV brackets for EVs, announced in late July, aim to boost domestic EV sales by discouraging imports, but they also risk suppressing broader EV market growth due to higher costs for consumers [1][2][3]. The price hike in many electric models in Türkiye is estimated to be approximately 25%.

The impact on the EV market includes a rise in EV prices across the board, potentially dampening demand for imported EVs due to the higher OTV burden and making Togg's models somewhat more attractive in relative terms. However, the overall price increases may slow EV adoption growth by pushing up consumer costs [1][2]. For instance, Tesla Model Y prices increased by roughly $6,000, potentially weakening demand for imported EVs, while Togg’s position gains support from government tax policies favoring local production [2].
