Tibet Leads China's Green Energy Transition with 99% Renewable Grid
Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet, is leading China's green energy transition. By the end of last year, over 99 percent of its electricity came from renewable sources, making its grid the cleanest in the country.
Xizang's vast wind and solar potential is being harnessed for sustainable development. In Amdo County, a major solar power project is underway, taking advantage of the region's over 2,800 hours of annual sunshine. The solar farm uses heliostats, mirrors that automatically adjust to track the sun and concentrate its rays onto a central tower to generate electricity. This innovative technology is expected to connect to the grid in October 2026, supplying clean, reliable energy to Amdo County and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, in Nagqu, 25 specially designed wind turbines are generating electricity for local communities. These turbines feature elongated bodies and advanced coatings for high-altitude performance, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency and expanding the swept area by the equivalent of three to five basketball courts compared to lower-altitude turbines. The region is also home to an intelligent wind farm monitoring system that tracks turbine performance in real time, reducing manual workload and improving safety.
Xizang's rapid advancement in green energy transition is evident in its expanding wind and solar capacity, as well as the construction of major clean energy hubs. With over 99 percent of its electricity generated from renewable sources, Xizang's grid is the cleanest in China, demonstrating the region's commitment to sustainable development.
