THW Celebrates 75 Years of Service with Grand Reception in Munich
The Bavarian State Chancellery is hosting a grand reception in Munich to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), with around 350 members in attendance. Since its founding in 1950, the THW has evolved significantly, expanding its competencies and making a substantial impact both at home and abroad.
Originally established to protect the population from the effects of war and clear up post-World War II devastation, the THW has since grown into a federal authority with a wide range of responsibilities. Today, it boasts around 16,000 volunteers in Bavaria alone, who dedicate their free time to safeguarding the community.
The THW's competencies have expanded significantly since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. It now plays a crucial role in emergency supply and restoration in civil defense. Last year, Bavarian deployment forces were instrumental in combating the damage caused by the flood disaster in the Ahrtal 2021 and the low pressure area 'Orinoco' in the south of Bavaria.
The THW's impact extends beyond Germany's borders. In 2023, it provided technical assistance in Slovenia and Turkey, demonstrating its commitment to international humanitarian efforts. This follows its first international mission in 1953, the same year it became a federal authority.
As the THW marks its 75th anniversary, it reflects on a rich history of service and adaptation. From its humble beginnings in 1950, it has grown into a vital force for good, protecting and aiding populations both at home and abroad. The reception in Munich serves as a testament to the dedication and hard work of its volunteers, who continue to make a significant difference in people's lives.
