Tesla's Electric Semi Truck Nears Mass Production at Gigafactory Nevada
Tesla is gearing up for mass production of its electric Semi truck at the Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. The company has been constructing a new factory exclusively for Semi truck production, with an aim to produce around 50,000 units annually once operational.
The progress towards mass production has been steady. Tesla has produced approximately 300 Semi trucks between 2022 and the end of 2024, mostly prototype and early generation units. The Semi 2.0, a refreshed design version incorporating lessons from these early models and real-world testing with logistics customers, is expected to be the true mass production model.
Elon Musk has confirmed that the Semi will launch officially in October 2025, with production beginning shortly thereafter and a gradual ramp-up throughout 2026. This timeline matches Tesla’s ongoing efforts to secure regulatory approvals and optimize the Semi’s design and performance based on customer feedback.
To facilitate this transition, Tesla has hired over 1,000 new workers at its Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. Prior to this hiring surge, fewer than 100 workers had been dedicated to the Semi program. The new hires have been onboarded in recent months and provided with factory tours and training. The facility's structural completion was confirmed in a video update released by Tesla on Monday.
The Tesla Semi features a massive battery pack made up of tens of thousands of individual cells. Production equipment is currently being installed at the new factory. In the months following the first delivery in December 2022, other major companies such as Walmart, Sysco, and Costco have also taken delivery of Tesla Semi trucks.
As Tesla moves closer to mass production, the Semi program currently has over 80 open roles for manufacturing, engineering, and quality assurance positions. The company aims to ramp up to full-scale manufacturing in 2026. This indicates that Tesla is transitioning from prototyping and pilot production towards true mass production within the next year at Giga Nevada, with the major volume deliveries expected in 2026.
Tesla's transition from prototype to mass production in the manufacturing of the Semi truck is propelled by the influx of over 1,000 new employees at the Gigafactory in Nevada, marking a significant expansion of the Semi program's workforce. As the company advances in the finance and business sectors, it seeks to leverage technology and industrial expertise to optimize the Semi's design and performance for the anticipated major volume deliveries in 2026.
