Bavarian Finance Minister Albert Füracker Calls for Caution Ahead of Cabinet Retreat, Suggests New Debt Possibility

Finance Minister Albert Füracker of Bavaria has urged restraint among his cabinet colleagues ahead of the upcoming retreat in Tegernsee this weekend, while maintaining an ambiguous stance on the potential for new debt. As the next budget is set to be drafted in the fall, Füracker emphasizes the need to follow current tax forecasts amidst competing departmental proposals.

In an interview with the German Press Agency, Füracker acknowledged the possibility of new debt but stressed that it was not his primary goal. He admitted, however, that he could not completely rule it out, as the budget's success depends on the tax forecast's final state in October.

As discussions continue regarding potential new debt throughout Germany, Füracker remains hopeful that the policies of the new black-red federal government would boost the economy, particularly in 2026 and 2027. However, he also expressed concerns over international developments and their impact on economic progress.

The retreat at Tegernsee, scheduled from Sunday to Monday, will see the participation of Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU) among other pressing issues. According to the latest tax forecast, Bavaria can expect a slight surplus of around 0.1 billion euros in 2026, although there is a "slight trend towards the negative" in 2027, as per Füracker.

The ongoing racial toums and drastic cuts are not currently on the table, according to Füracker, who expressed confidence in the coalition's ability to pass the budget unanimously. Bavaria's budget has experienced growth for several years, suggesting continued financial stability despite the economic challenges faced by the region and the nation.
