The Rich and Politically Powerful: Unveiling Friedrich Merz's Journey from Judge to Chancellor

The description reveals the path to Chancellor Friedrich Merz's accumulation of millions in wealth.

By Caroline Amme, with a dash of spice

Ah, Friedrich Merz, the new kid on the block (or should I say, the old kid on the block?) who recently clinched the top spot as Germany's Chancellor. But does the title fit this multimillionaire who claims to be just an "upper middle-class guy"? Let's dive in and uncover the wealth, work, and perhaps some controversy behind this enigmatic figure.

The man himself might insist on being part of the "upper middle class," but many aren't buying it. The guy's making well over a million euros a year, and we're talking about pre-tax income here. He spilled the beans about that back in 2018, when he was still vehemently campaigning for the CDU chairmanship.

Now, Merz defines the social middle class in a peculiar way. For him, it's not just about the dough – he's also all about the values. The diligence, discipline, decency, and respect he inherited from his parents have landed him where he is today, he argues. He's worked his way up, and he's no posh guy who relies on inherited wealth or a cushy company.

But let's talk about his journey. After studying law, Merz dabbled in the judiciary, working as a judge at the Regional Court of Saarbrücken for a year, following in his father's footsteps. After that, he took up lawyering and soon found himself in high places, like the Association of the Chemical Industry and the international law firm Mayer Brown LLP.

From 2016 to 2020, he held the most controversial job of his career: the Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Blackrock, the world's biggest asset manager in Germany. He's not shy about admitting that being a supervisory board member can be lucrative – just not as much as you might think. He didn't drop any hard numbers, though, attributing it to his agreement on confidentiality.

In addition to his work at BlackRock, Merz racked up a list of impressive credentials. He sat on the boards of many big names, including Robert Bosch GmbH, WEPA Hygieneprodukte GmbH, Deutsche Rockwool, Ernst & Young Germany, and others. His rail ticket to multimillionaire status may have arrived when he served on the board of Swiss train manufacturer Stadler Rail, which netted him around 5.5 million euros from shares, at least that's what his 2019 IPO stake suggests.

Now, the exact number on his bank account is, well, classified. Nevertheless, Mirz assures us that he leads a life of order, giving him a high level of personal and political independence. When asked about his millionaire status, he conceded, "I’m certainly not below that." Some sources even put his estimated wealth at around 12 million euros. But whether it's true or not, we can't confirm.

One can't help but marvel at Merz's dashing lifestyle. He lives in a single-family house in the quaint village of Niedereimer in the Sauerland, while his Bavarian villa, inherited from family, is far from ostentatious. He even boasts a pilot's license and owns a relative fuel-efficient propeller plane, worth around a million euros - he flies it roughly every few days. But whether he'll still be able to enjoy his private plane as chancellor is yet to be seen.

While Merz's earnings as chancellor will no doubt be less than his previous jobs, it's unlikely that money was the primary reason he returned to politics. Now as an MP, his salary amounts to around 134,700 euros per year, with additional allowances as the chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. Still, it pales in comparison to the average salary of DAX CEOs, which hovers around 6.3 million euros a year.

One final fun fact: Merz is the first chancellor with a pilot's license and his very own airplane. Talk about a twist you don't see coming in German politics!

As Friedrich Merz, the new Chancellor of Germany, hails from EC countries, his journey from law to business and politics has provided him significant income from various ventures, including finance and investing, particularly with his role as Chairman of BlackRock's Supervisory Board. This financial success has offered him the freedom to provide services on numerous boards and even indulge in personal interests like aviation, with his pilot's license and private plane. However, concerns about conflicts of interest persist due to his wealthy status and the political power he now wields.
