Tesla to Unveil Second Experience Center in India within Next Month
Tesla Makes Its Debut in India with First Showroom in Mumbai
In a significant move for the electric vehicle industry, Tesla has officially entered the Indian market. The American automaker has launched its operations in India with the opening of its first showroom in Mumbai in mid-July 2025.
The Mumbai showroom marks the beginning of Tesla's operations in India, initially selling imported models including the Model 3 and the Model Y, priced around ₹60 lakh (~$70,000). The company plans to set up four charging stations each in Mumbai and Delhi, comprising Supercharger and destination chargers, to support its customers.
Beyond Mumbai, Tesla has plans to open an Experience Center in several locations across India. The Aerocity location in Delhi will be the second of these centers. Ishan Agarwal, an Indian tech and EV enthusiast, was the first to share an image of the under-construction showroom on social media.
Regarding local manufacturing, Tesla has yet to commit to a factory in India. The company appears reluctant to start manufacturing domestically due to existing challenges and concerns over import tariffs. However, India’s 2024 EV policy has reduced import taxes on electric vehicles, which allows Tesla to bring in cars at lower levies than before, improving market feasibility for imports.
Industry experts anticipate the possibility of Tesla establishing a manufacturing plant in India within the next 2-3 years if market conditions and export opportunities become favorable. This could facilitate Tesla offering India-specific models and significantly boost sales.
Tesla's discussions with the Indian government aim to make its offerings more competitively priced in the Indian market. The company is actively discussing with the government to secure a reduction in import duties, aiming for a tax rate closer to 10%.
The opening of the Delhi showroom is part of Tesla's aggressive scaling strategy in India, one of the world's largest automotive markets. The location of the new showroom in Delhi's bustling Aerocity district suggests a focus on high-traffic areas.
In addition to the Mumbai showroom, Tesla plans to open a second showroom in India, located in Delhi's Aerocity district near IGI Airport. The company is also scheduled to open a new Tesla Experience Center in Delhi in August.
As Tesla expands its presence in India, it is expected to offer more trims and models to cater to the diverse needs of its customers. The company is currently selling the Model Y in India in two Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variants.
