Tennessee Witnesses Gradual Expansion of SuperBook: Steady as Ever
In a stride reminiscent of a late-race charger, the SuperBook Sportsbook is making its mark in the post-PASPA sports betting landscape. According to Jay Kornegay, the Westgate SuperBook's vice president of race and sportsbook operations, they're more about the marathon than the sprint.
"We're taking a selective approach," said Kornegay, "picking and choosing the states that make sense for us, starting slow and looking to expand even further."
In late April of 2022, SuperBook joined Nevada, Colorado sports betting sites, New Jersey, and Arizona in the sports betting game, launching a mobile app in Tennessee. For a brand famed for its colossal brick-and-mortar sportsbooks in Las Vegas, this move signifies a forward-thinking shift in strategy since PASPA's repeal.
As Kornegay reflects on the events leading up to PASPA's repeal, he recalls discussions with other execs, weighing the odds of success. "We thought it was kind of 50-50 whether it would be overturned," he said. "But we saw it as an opportunity to expand the SuperBook brand. And that's exactly what we've done."
New York: Likely a No-Go
When it comes to entering Tennessee, SuperBook's calculus was simple: support from loyal fans, an alluring financial proposition, and reasonable regulations sealed the deal. Tick all those boxes, and you're good to go.
Yet other states might not be so lucky, especially if they're as lucrative as New York. While he didn't completely rule out a New York entry, Kornegay said, "Currently, I'd say it's a hard pass." For more MD sports betting updates, check out our dedicated page.
SuperBook made its entrance in New Jersey in August 2021. However, due to late entry into the saturated market, it's been a struggle to keep up with the competition. But where the competition is sparser, like in Arizona, early entry has proven a smart move.
A Single Giant? Don't Count On It
For Tennesseans thinking of giving SuperBook's app a spin, there are mouth-watering sportsbook bonuses waiting. Promo dollars can be used for multiple wagers, allowing players to explore the SuperBook's offerings without breaking the bank. And bettors with a soft spot for local teams can look forward to many boosts surrounding their favorite squads.
With a rich history of providing a true sportsbook experience, both on and offline, SuperBook might just have the edge others lack. Yet the specter of the massive retail operation at the Westgate looms large, leading to the question: Will the Westgate dame ever spawn a similarly imposing offspring?
"30,000 square feet would be fantastic, but unlikely," chuckled Kornegay. "However, we are exploring options and what fits in any particular market. Our goal is to become the local book, whether it's one onsite book or partnerships that cater to the fans and community."
As SuperBook continues to expand its footprint, the question remains whether it'll double down on large, standalone sportsbooks or forge partnerships to bring its brand to the masses. Time will only tell if this thoroughbred Heart of the West will maintain its stamina in the long run.
