Heidelberg - It seems like the Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle) spielkartens (Joker Cards) are being swapped out for the Deutschmark as nearly a third of German consumers are opting for fewer American goods and services, according to a survey by Innofact for Verivox. A whopping 34.3 percent of respondents have already reduced their consumption, while another 17.1 percent have plans to cut back.

Digging deeper, it appears consumers are on edge, especially when it comes to tech gear. Over a third have already, or are planning to, reconsider their smartphone purchases, while 30 percent aim to limit, or eliminate, American computer hardware and social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter. However, fewer than one in five (16.8 percent) could imagine trading WhatsApp for a German alternative, making the American messaging powerhouse indispensable for many.

Interestingly, nearly 30 percent of survey participants find themselves in a state of indecision about boycotting US goods. Over a third, 36.3 percent, believe that ubiquitous services like WhatsApp and Amazon have already integrated themselves so deeply into our daily lives that they're indispensable.

Conducted between April 30 and May 2, 2025, the survey polled 1,015 individuals aged 18 to 79 from all federal states, providing a representative sample of Germany's population.
