Stuttgart's S-Bahn service will commence a main line closure this coming Saturday.

In the summer of 2026, commuters in Stuttgart will face partial closures on the S-Bahn trunk line, specifically in the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim and Bad Cannstatt areas, as part of the ongoing Stuttgart 21 railway infrastructure project. This is the fifth construction closure and is essential for commissioning and finalizing the project's upgrades.

The most significant disruption will occur in spring 2027, when a 12-week full closure of the S-Bahn main line between Stuttgart-Vaihingen and Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (underground station) is planned. This closure will cover the Easter and Whitsun periods, and the old terminus station will continue operating until summer 2027 with some S-Bahn services maintained. By mid-2027, the long-standing S-Bahn terminus will be decommissioned after the completion of new track integrations and infrastructure upgrades.

During these closures, rail replacement transport will be organized by Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen (SSB) using buses and light rail to cover the closed S-Bahn sections. Passengers are advised to plan for additional travel time, especially during the 12-week shutdown in spring 2027. Replacement bus services will operate between affected sectors during tunnel or line closures, with coordination from Stuttgart’s transport authorities to minimize inconvenience.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) also plans to run additional Regional-Express trains between Central Station and Böblingen via Stuttgart-Vaihingen, with a planned hourly shuttle service. Between Leonberg and Stuttgart University, buses on line X60 will run as an additional cross-connection every 15 minutes during peak hours on weekdays. Tram U1 will be extended to Stuttgart-Vaihingen during peak hours to relieve RE trains and U14.

It's important to note that the S-Bahn lines S2, S4, S5, and S6 will be affected by these closures, with some lines turning in certain stations or being detoured via the tracks for long-distance and regional traffic. Stops at various stations, such as Stuttgart-Sommerrain, Stuttgart Nürnberger Straße, Stuttgart Neckarpark, Stuttgart-Obertürkheim, Stuttgart Feuerbach, and Stuttgart Nordbahnhof, will be omitted in both directions for these lines.

Passengers are encouraged to check the timetable before departure due to changes in the timetable for regional and long-distance traffic. All information about the main line closure can be found on the website [stammstrecke.info](http://stammstrecke.info) and on the websites of the private regional providers.

The closures are necessary for Stuttgart 21, a project aimed at modernizing the city's railway infrastructure. The new through station is targeted for a December 2026 opening, improving long-term rail services despite these short-term disruptions.

The ongoing Stuttgart 21 railway infrastructure project in 2026 will necessitate partial closures in the public-transit sector, specifically on the S-Bahn trunk line in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim and Bad Cannstatt. During the 12-week full closure in spring 2027, finance will be allocated for organizing rail replacement transportation, such as buses and light rail, to cover the closed S-Bahn sections, especially during the Easter and Whitsun periods. Industry will play a role in Deutsche Bahn's (DB) plan to run additional Regional-Express trains between Central Station and Böblingen, providing an hourly shuttle service as a temporary solution.
