Stuck transport truck carrying alcohol impaled under Fredericton's overpass
In the heart of Fredericton, a transport truck found itself lodged under an overpass on Thursday morning, causing a temporary traffic disruption and drawing the attention of nearby residents.
The incident occurred on the overpass that links to the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge. According to reports, the driver of the truck is on the scene, and no injuries have been reported. Initial assessments confirm there was no structural damage to the bridge or surrounding infrastructure.
The police received the call about the incident at around 9:30 a.m. Traffic has been interrupted due to the lodged vehicle, and temporary closures include the Waterloo Row, King Street, Brunswick Street, and University Avenue intersection.
Pedestrians on the walking bridge continue to access it, stopping to observe the dodged vehicle. Signs noting the clearance of 3.5 metres are posted ahead of the overpass and on the structure itself, suggesting that the truck may have failed to heed these warnings.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the area. Rob Scullion, a resident next to the overpass, has witnessed about 15 to 16 similar incidents since he moved in April. In one instance, he reported feeling the building shake when a truck struck the structure. Mr. Scullion attempts to prevent trucks from risking the overpass by waving his arms.
The truck was carrying non-hazardous materials, and according to eyewitness accounts, alcoholic beverages were being unloaded from the ford at the time of the incident. The company or person responsible for the transport truck has not been publicly specified.
Despite the disruption, the city continues to function, and the incident serves as a reminder for drivers to be mindful of their surroundings and to adhere to posted signs for the safety of all.
