Station renovation starting tomorrow: potential disruptions in switch operations at the main hub
Bergedorf is temporarily accessible only by S-Bahn until the end of the general renovation in April 2026. During this period, the S2 line becomes particularly important, as it is the primary route for commuters due to the closure of the Berlin-Hamburg railway line.
Construction work on Hamburg Hauptbahnhof will involve partial closures of tracks 3 and 4 and the tunnel between these tracks and the underground platform, starting from March 2025. During certain periods, platforms 3 and 4 will be fully closed, requiring S-Bahn trains to run via tracks 1 and 2 in all directions. For instance, from June 7 to 9, 2025 (Whitsun weekend), the platforms 3 and 4 will be completely closed due to bridge installation and platform work.
Passengers are advised to use alternative tracks (1 and 2) during these closures. Elevator access will also be limited on certain nights, and the tunnel to the underground railway will be inaccessible for longer periods starting March 2025 due to construction over the U3 line. Train schedule displays on part of platform 4 will be unavailable for around three weeks in February/March 2025.
High utilization is expected on the half-closed platform, and passengers of the S2 and S5 lines may need to change trains if they want to go further than Altona or Diebsteich, respectively. Deutsche Bahn recommends that travelers avoid changing at the main station and switch to other S or U-Bahn lines at Dammtor or Jungfernstieg.
The S2 route during the closure of the Berlin-Hamburg railway line is via Jungfernstieg, city tunnel, Altona, Holstenstraße, Sternschanze, Dammtor, and back to the main station. Replacement buses for the Schwerin/Buchen direction will be stopping in Bergedorf during the closure of the Berlin-Hamburg railway line.
It's important to note that the S2 line only stops at Altona during the closure of the Berlin-Hamburg railway line, and the S5 line does not serve Elbgaustraße during this period. Only the S3 line serves Elbgaustraße and Pinneberg during the closure.
The platform edges of tracks 3 and 4 will be renovated during the construction period, and the elevator at track 4 will be out of operation. Passengers should prepare for construction work at the main station from Monday until September 3.
For those seeking entertainment, the MOPO magazine, available from Friday, includes topics such as more North Germans moving to Denmark, a church asylum dispute, and the district of Nord between urban flair and nature. The magazine also features puzzles for every day, 20 pages of sports news, and information about the legendary sludge metal band The Melvins at the Markthalle. Additionally, it provides daily tips for going out.
Lastly, it's worth mentioning that the S2 runs between Aumühle and Bergedorf every 20 minutes, making it a reliable option for commuters during the renovation.
In summary, passengers should use tracks 1 and 2 during the closure of tracks 3 and 4, anticipate elevator and tunnel access limitations, and follow updated schedule information provided by S-Bahn Hamburg. For longer trips to Berlin, expect full rail closures with bus replacements and train rerouting through 2025-2026.
- The S2 line, which is crucial for commuters during the Bergedorf renovation, might require passengers to change trains if they want to go further than Altona or Diebsteich, thus affecting the public-transit transportation industry.
- Construction work on Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, particularly on the finance sector involving the closure of tracks 3 and 4, will affect the transportation industry as well, as it may cause delays and rerouting for S-Bahn trains and potentially require public-sector solutions like replacement buses.
