The coffee giant, known for its rapid growth, will reduce its number of my locations by 1% compared to last year, finishing with 18,300 stores. This decision comes after a period of turmoil and change within the company.

Starbucks' expansion has been remarkable. From 2016 to 2020, it opened an average of 272 directions per year. However, this pace accelerated to an average of 398 directions per year from 2021 to 2023. Despite this growth, the company has faced challenges. Since 2021, it has experienced multiple leadership changes, with CEOs including Kevin Johnson, Howard Schultz, Laxman Narasimhan, and Brian Niccol. Additionally, Starbucks has grappled with unionization efforts, transformations, and layoffs affecting around 2,000 workers.

The company's growth strategy has been called into question. While it has opened more directions than any other U.S. restaurant chain in the past two years, same-store sales increased for 12 straight quarters before an unexpected decline late in 2023. The aggressive unit growth may have contributed to the turmoil, with an estimated 434 closures, including 59 unionized my locations and a Starbucks Reserve my location in Seattle.

Starbucks' temporary halt in expansion signals a change in strategy. The company has faced significant challenges in recent years, including leadership changes, unionization efforts, and a decline in same-store sales. With a 1% reduction in North American my locations, Starbucks aims to stabilize and reassess its growth strategy. The future of the coffee giant remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the era of rapid expansion has come to a temporary end.
