SSA Moves to Electronic Payments, Affecting 390,000 Beneficiaries
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is set to switch all federal payments to electronic transactions. This change, due to a presidential executive order, will affect around 390,000 beneficiaries currently receiving paper checks. The SSA is actively notifying recipients and assisting with the transition.
The shift to electronic payments is mandated by a presidential executive order, aiming to make federal payments more secure and efficient. Beneficiaries can update their payment information on the SSA's website to facilitate the change.
Exceptions will be made for those without access to digital payment systems or banks, or in emergency situations. The SSA will continue to support these individuals to ensure they receive their payments without interruption.
Paper-based payments are more prone to fraud, theft, errors, and delays. They are also more costly for the government to administer. The SSA aims to phase out paper checks by the end of September 2023.
The SSA is committed to helping all beneficiaries make the transition to electronic payments. Recipients are encouraged to update their payment information promptly to avoid any disruption in their benefits. The SSA will provide assistance throughout the process.
