SSA Drops Paper Checks: 68M Americans Go Digital by 2023

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a significant change in payment methods. Starting September 30, 2023, the SSA will cease issuing paper checks, marking a shift towards electronic payments. This move aims to enhance security, reduce costs, and minimise errors and delays, as per an executive order by President Donald Trump in March 2023.

Currently, over 68 million Americans receive Social Security benefits, with approximately 390,000 beneficiaries still using paper checks. The SSA will make exceptions for emergency situations and those without access to digital payment systems or banks. Recipients can update their payment information on the SSA's website. The agency is actively reaching out to beneficiaries to inform them of the change and guide them through the transition process to electronic payments. This shift is expected to increase efficiency and security in government payment processes.

By September 30, 2023, the SSA will discontinue paper checks, with exceptions for emergencies and those without digital access. Recipients are encouraged to update their payment information online. This change, driven by President Trump's executive order, seeks to improve the payment system's security, reduce costs, and minimise errors and delays.
