Spotify's Daniel Ek Steps Down as CEO, Names Co-CEOs
Spotify's founder and CEO, Daniel Ek, is set to step down from his role on January 1, 2026. He will transition to the position of Executive Chairman, maintaining an active involvement in the company. Taking the reins as co-CEOs are Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström, who will join the board of directors.
Daniel Ek, who has led Spotify since its inception, will continue to influence key decisions and strategic directions as Executive Chairman. This new 'European chairman' model keeps him closely involved, unlike typical U.S. board chair roles.
Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström, currently serving as Chief Product and Technology Officer and Chief Business Officer respectively, have been leading Spotify's strategy and operations since around 2023. Their appointment as co-CEOs, effective January 2025, marks a significant shift in the company's leadership. They will report directly to Daniel Ek and play a crucial role in Spotify's future growth.
With Daniel Ek stepping down as CEO and assuming the role of Executive Chairman, Spotify enters a new phase. Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström, with their extensive experience and proven leadership, will guide the company as co-CEOs. The future of Spotify looks promising under this new leadership structure.
