Southern Nevada's Regional Transportation Commission awards contract to New Flyer for the delivery of 46 eco-friendly, 40-foot CNG transit buses.

In a significant move towards sustainable public transportation, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada has contracted New Flyer of America for 46 Xcelsior® compressed natural gas (CNG) 40-foot transit buses. This partnership, spanning 30 years, marks a continued commitment to cleaner transit solutions by the RTC.

The Xcelsior CNG buses, already part of RTC's current fleet that consists entirely of NFI Group buses, are renowned for their environmental benefits. They emit 90 percent less nitrogen oxide (NOx) compared to conventional diesel engines, significantly reducing local air pollution. This reduction is linked to respiratory and cardiovascular health issues, making the implementation of these buses crucial for the wellbeing of the communities served, notably including the Clark County area around Las Vegas.

Moreover, these buses meet particulate matter emission standards without the need for a filter, reducing maintenance complexity and potential secondary emissions associated with some diesel particulate filter systems. This feature, combined with the buses' reduced NOx emissions, contributes substantially to cleaner, more breathable air for the communities.

Chris Stoddart, President of North American Bus and Coach (NFI), expressed pride in the partnership. He looks forward to continuing this collaboration in the future, as the Xcelsior CNG buses deliver value to the RTC and the citizens of Southern Nevada.

This collaboration aligns with federal transit sustainability initiatives, as funding from the Federal Transit Administration supported the purchase. New Flyer’s strategy underlines the environmental advantages of their propulsion-agnostic solutions, providing transit agencies with practical ways to reduce their carbon footprint and improve urban air quality without compromising operational capabilities.

In summary, the environmental benefits of the Xcelsior CNG buses in this RTC partnership center on drastically lowered NOx emissions, effective particulate control without filters, and thus meaningful improvements in community air quality in Southern Nevada. This collaboration is a significant step towards advancing the goals of sustainable public transportation.

  1. The environmental advantages of New Flyer's Xcelsior CNG buses, such as reduced nitrogen oxide emissions and effective particulate control without filters, are not only beneficial for the RTC but also for the automotive industry, as they contribute to cleaner transportation solutions.
  2. With the implementation of these Xcelsior CNG buses in Southern Nevada, the finance sector also stands to gain as investments in cleaner, more sustainable transportation options like these may lead to long-term financial advantages, such as lower operating costs and health-related savings.
