Skoda abandons plans for electric compact vehicles, following Volkswagen's ID lineup.
Skoda, the Czech automobile manufacturer, has announced that it will not be joining Volkswagen in the market segment of the ID. Every1, Volkswagen's upcoming entry-level electric car.
According to Skoda CEO Klaus Zellmer, the decision not to participate in this market segment is a 'smart decision' for Volkswagen, but Skoda has chosen a different path. The Epiq, Skoda's smallest full-electric vehicle, will be the brand's focus instead.
The Epiq is based on the same version of Volkswagen's MEB electric vehicle platform as the ID. Polo, a similarly compact SUV from VW, and the Raval from Seat's sister brand Cupra. However, the Epiq will differ visually and in terms of target audience from these vehicles.
Skoda, VW, Seat/Cupra, and VW Commercial Vehicles aim to have a strong presence in the stock market without stepping on each other's toes. The production of the Epiq, ID. Polo, ID. Cross, and Raval will take place in Spain by Seat to reduce costs through economies of scale.
While Skoda will not introduce a counterpart to Volkswagen's ID. Every1, the company continues to invest in compact combustion engine models such as the Fabia, Kamiq, and Scala, including electrification. Hybrid technology will be introduced for the Fabia and Kamiq models.
The Epiq SUV, set to launch next year, will be the smallest full-electric vehicle in Skoda's lineup. Skoda CEO Klaus Zellmer refers to the upcoming production version of the Vision 7S, a seven-seat SUV concept, as a testament to the brand's commitment to electric vehicles.
Volkswagen, on the other hand, plans to launch the ID. Every1 around 2027 as a smaller, cheaper electric model under approximately 20,000 euros, positioned below models like the Skoda Epiq priced around 25,000 euros.
Despite not participating in the ID. Every1 stock market today, Skoda believes it is in a strong position with its combustion engine models and the cost advantages it can achieve in the market. The brand is confident that its focus on the Epiq and other electric vehicles will continue to drive its success in the automotive industry.
