Forget about the pilots and engineers, let's talk about the creative minds that play a crucial role in the aviation world—the artists. One such individual is Paul Bowen, a renowned aerial photographer who's been capturing breathtaking aviation shots for more than four decades.

Tagged as one of "51 Heroes of Aviation" by Flying Magazine in 2013, Paul Bowen is no stranger to the industry. Based in Wichita, Kansas, this commercial photographer has a deep-seated passion for both his craft and aviation. Since 1972, he's been snapping stunning aerial images, specializing in a technique called air-to-air photography—capturing aircraft mid-flight from another aircraft.

When Paul hears the roar of jet engines overhead, it's more than just noise. It's an invitation to create—an opportunity to capture the raw power of flight and the machines that make it possible. Climbing into the seat of a World War II-era B-25 Mitchell, he embarks on thrilling photo sessions, taking his scenarios to new heights.

While the process might seem simple, it's anything but. Before takeoff, both aircraft discuss maneuvers and safety concerns on the ground. With communication via headset, microphone, and hand signals, the pair then soar into the sky, creating mesmerizing photographs that grace the covers of magazines worldwide. Paul’s pictures are so fantastic that they've been featured in more than 1,000 magazine issues and countless ad campaigns since his very first day as an aerial photographer back in 1972[1].

Over the years, Paul has taken some incredible photographs, but there are a few that stand out. His initial foray into aerial photography, a Beech Baron, made him sick due to the constant motion. Yet, he pushed through and found inspiration in every shoot that followed. One of his favorite shots was for Bombardier Global Express, which began in Hong Kong and traversed Sydney, Honolulu, and ended in San Francisco.

But there's one image that still eludes him—a picture of the Space Shuttle. According to Paul, it's the pilots who deserve the credit for his stunning images, but the industry considers him a hero as well[2]. In 2008, the International Society for Aviation Photography awarded Paul Bowen their highest honor, the Award of Excellence[3].

Paul Bowen's fascination with the beauty and power of flight began at a young age, influenced by iconic aviation artists and photographers who vividly captured aircraft in motion. His unique approach to aviation photography involves a blend of technical proficiency and creative artistry, resulting in images that exude both power and grace[3].

His signature technique? Motion blur, which emphasizes speed and energy, ensuring his work stands out from the competition. Some of his most memorable shots include a jet casting a shadow over a cloud bank and a formation of aerobatic planes silhouetted against a resplendent sunrise[3].
