Shrinkage of 2.4% predicted for the German packaging sector in 2024
In the latest annual report by the German Association of the Packaging Industry (GADV), it was revealed that the packaging sector experienced a mixed bag of results in 2024. The GADV, a joint voice for material-spanning, economic, and technical issues, represents approximately 900 member companies in the industry.
The report showed a 2.4% decrease in packaging material production compared to the previous year, amounting to 17.1 million tons. The production value of packaging materials decreased by 4.1% to 37.1 billion euros in 2024.
Glass packaging was particularly hard hit, with a 2.5% decrease in quantity and a 10.4% fall in production value. On the other hand, aluminum packaging was the only fraction to show a gain, increasing production by 1.3% and recording a 3.8% increase in production value.
Plastic packaging, which accounted for the largest share of production value at 44.6%, showed a slight increase in quantity by 1.1%, but its production value decreased by 1.5%. Metal packaging, meanwhile, decreased by 2.4% in quantity and by 2.6% in production value.
Paper, cardboard, and carton packaging dominated the market with 47.5% in terms of quantity, but they experienced a 2.9% decrease in quantity and a 7.8% decrease in production value.
The GADV's focus on material-spanning, economic, and technical issues suggests that it plays a significant role in shaping industry policies and standards. The organization is based in Germany and is supported by several industry associations, including Aluminium Deutschland, Bundesverband Glasindustrie, Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen, Verband Metallverpackungen, and economic associations of the paper processing industry.
The GADV's membership likely includes a significant portion of the major players in the German packaging sector, representing over 80% of the production value of the industry. The organization includes companies from various sectors of the packaging industry, such as aluminum, glass, plastic, metal, and paper processing.
It is worth noting that the organization representing the metal lid industry in Germany and cooperating with the Joint Committee of German Packaging Manufacturers is the Verband Metallverpackungen e.V. (Metal Packaging Association).
As the industry continues to evolve, the GADV will undoubtedly remain a key player in shaping its future, advocating for the interests of its members and driving innovation in the packaging sector.
