Indore, MP: Horticulture Targets and Agricultural Innovations
Horticulture in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, is steaming forward with clear objectives. The divisional commissioner, Deepak Singh, has urged officers to complete the agricultural production and horticulture scheme targets within the prescribed time limit.
During a recent review meeting, Singh discussed the schemes, programs, and activities related to crop production by the department. He emphasized the importance of promoting schemes like the Integrated Horticulture Development Mission (MIDH) and suggested cultivating crops such as roses and gerberas. Organic farming, vermicompost, and vermi bed programs also received his attention.
Singh stressed the need for planned and timely completion of the projects, with a special focus on horticulture and food processing. Negligent officers can expect disciplinary action, he warned.
The meeting revealed that the agricultural area in Madhya Pradesh currently stands at 27.71 lakh hectares, with Indore division accounting for 4.18 lakh hectares. The state's horticulture export contribution is 1.92%. For the upcoming year, the proposed area under horticulture schemes is 4,34,195 hectares.
Discussions also covered horticultural crops, fruit area expansion under the state-funded scheme, spice areas, protected farming, farmer training-cum-tours, drip and portable sprinklers. Suggestions from officers were also considered.
In addition to these initiatives, there's a significant push towards agricultural research and innovations. The Cabinet has approved a grant of Rs. 2 crore for IIT Indore to establish an agritech hub. This project aims to promote advanced agricultural research. Another intriguing development is the use of hydroponics and aeroponics at Government Holkar Science College, Indore, to cultivate crops indoors without soil or sunlight.
Moreover, the Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan is focusing on creating awareness about the latest farm technologies and practices in villages across Madhya Pradesh. An agri-innovation event is also planned for November 2025 at Labhganga Exhibition Center, Indore, to facilitate networking and business opportunities for agricultural innovations in Madhya Pradesh.
