Seizure of High-Value Luxury Goods and Smuggled Cigarettes: A Joint Customs and Police Operation

In a significant development, the customs investigation office in Frankfurt am Main is currently handling the further criminal proceedings following the seizure of high-value untaxed luxury items and smuggled cigarettes with a total value of over 150,000 euros.

The operation began on May 3rd, when a BMW X5 with a German registration was checked by the traffic police in Aschaffenburg - Höhbach. During this check, over 100,000 euros worth of gold jewelry was discovered. The vehicle was then subjected to a further intensive vehicle check at the Dettelbach customs office - Mainfrankenpark, where a control unit from the Schweinfurt customs office took over the procedure.

Upon further inspection, ten packs of untaxed tobacco products, the gold jewelry, and numerous sunglasses with brand emblems of luxury brands were found in the vehicle. Around 160 designer sunglasses with a value of over 50,000 euros were also uncovered.

The vehicle occupants did not declare the goods for customs clearance upon entry into the European Union and did not provide any information about the type, origin, and destination of the goods. As a result, a criminal investigation was initiated against the Romanian citizen driving the vehicle on suspicion of money laundering.

The customs investigation is conducting the subsequent investigations in close coordination with the public prosecutor's office in Aschaffenburg. The name of the customs official coordinating the cooperation with the Aschaffenburg - Höhbach police is not provided in the available search results.

A joint press release was issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office Aschaffenburg and the Main Customs Office Schweinfurt regarding the seizure. The tax evasion amount for the goods seized is approximately 34,000 euros.
