2025 SEC Gymnastics Championships Heat Up: The Unfortunate Exclusion of Arkansas Razorbacks

The stage is set for the 2025 SEC Gymnastics Championships in Birmingham, Alabama, but all eyes are on one team that won't be participating – the No. 16 Arkansas Razorbacks. While all nine teams in this top-notch competition rank among the nation's top-25 programs, only eight can advance to the SEC Championships.

After the high-profile addition of Oklahoma Sooners due to conference realignment, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) decided to revamp its championship layout. In December 2024, they officially announced the new format, revealing that only the top eight teams (determined by National Qualifying Score – NQS) would qualify, with Seeds 5-8 competing in the afternoon session, and Seeds 1-4 in the evening.

The issue of an excluded team could have been easily resolved by implementing a bye rotation, common in NCAA women's gymnastics. Previously, the National Championship featured six teams, with each receiving a bye rotation. However, the SEC remained stubborn, with TV involvement apparently stalling the proposal.

Coach Jay Clark of the No. 2 LSU Tigers, who has a firm spot in the conference championships, voiced his frustrations over the change. "How can you be in the top 15 in the country and not make your conference championship?" he questioned, visibly dismayed [3].

The Arkansas Razorbacks, coached by Olympic gold medalist Jordyn Wieber and led by Olympic alternate Joscelyn Roberson, won't just miss out on a chance to compete for the SEC team title – their top gymnasts will also lose their shot at individual event titles. Roberson and Frankie Price, ranked 12th on floor in the SEC, are now out of contention.

"It's kind of amazing" Coach Clark mused, "that you can be in the top 15 in the country and not make your conference championship." As a result of failing to reach the score required to qualify, the Razorbacks became the unlucky ninth SEC team on Friday.

With their conference championship dreams shattered, the Razorbacks will miss out on an opportunity to boost their NQS during the SEC, Big 12, and Big Ten championships next weekend. Their postseason destiny now hangs in the balance, as they watch from the sidelines while their competitors rack up scores.

Meanwhile, the nation's sixteenth-best team may struggle to find their place in the postseason, thanks to the SEC's controversial format change. The gymnastics community is looking to the SEC to reconsider and ensure a more inclusive and fair competition for all teams.
