Scipion appoints a new leader for trade finance department

In a strategic move to strengthen its trade finance facilities, Scipion Capital, a specialist trade finance investment platform, has appointed Paul Baker as its new head of trade finance. This newly-created position is expected to play a pivotal role in the company's growth and success.

With a wealth of experience spanning various international financial institutions, Paul Baker brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to Scipion Capital. His career includes significant tenures at leading global banks such as Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), Citi, UFJ Bank (now MUFG), UBS, ING, and Paribas.

In his new role at Scipion Capital, Baker will oversee the company's trade functions, managing and building out its global trading desk. He will also advise on key deals, develop trade finance facilities, and work closely with Scipion Capital's investors and trade teams to maximise returns.

Nicolas Clavel, Scipion Capital's chief investment officer, considers Baker's appointment a strategic hire. Clavel values Baker's reputation and networks in the industry, as well as his long-standing industry experience, which is expected to benefit Scipion Capital's resources and diversify its teams within the trade and asset-raising functions.

Before joining Scipion Capital, Baker was within SMBC's structured trade and commodity finance department, where he held a prominent role. Prior to that, he served as director for metals and mining in the commodity finance department at West LB.

Baker's extensive experience in trade finance is evident in his ability to structure and syndicate trade finance deals, manage credit risk and operations for trade finance portfolios, and navigate complex international trade transactions and supply chain finance. He has a deep understanding of trade finance instruments like letters of credit, factoring, forfaiting, and export credit, as well as the integration of trade finance with corporate and investment banking.

Scipion Capital aims to leverage Baker's expertise to enhance its position in the trade finance investment market. The company, known for its innovative financial structuring and technology-driven approach, is poised to benefit significantly from Baker's strategic leadership and operational skills.

As Baker settles into his new role, the financial industry watches with anticipation, eager to see how his appointment will shape Scipion Capital's future and the broader trade finance landscape.

Paul Baker, in his new role at Scipion Capital, will not only manage and expand its global trading desk but also develop trade finance facilities for the company. His extensive experience in trade finance, stretching across various leading institutions like Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), Citi, UFJ Bank (now MUFG), UBS, ING, and Paribas, will enable him to advise on key deals, invest wisely, and work closely with Scipion Capital's investors and trade teams to maximize returns, thereby strengthening the company's position in commodity finance and trade finance.
