Saxony-Anhalt Bolsters Municipal Role in Renewable Energy Expansion

Saxony-Anhalt has bolstered municipal involvement in renewable energy expansion with a new law, the Acceptance and Participation Act. This move aims to maintain the state's pioneering status and supply businesses with cheaper, sustainable energy.

The new law, passed by the state parliament, requires operators of new or repowered plants after 1 October 2022 to contribute to the renewable energy news expansion. It does not allow retroactive charging. Energy Minister Armin Willingmann hailed this as a 'good day' for Saxony-Anhalt's municipalities and rural residents.

Under the law, municipalities can claim a higher participation in the EEG, increasing from 0.2 to 0.3 cents per kilowatt hour. For wind power, municipalities within 2.5 kilometers are eligible; for photovoltaics, the claim is for the plant's location. This could bring significant revenue to municipalities. For instance, a 5-megawatt wind power plant could generate an annual levy of at least 27,500 euros. A performance-oriented flat-rate levy will be paid: 5,500 euros per megawatt for wind power plants and 2,500 euros per megawatt for photovoltaic plants.

Municipalities have the freedom to decide how to use the revenue, allowing for municipal projects or independent participation news models.

With this law, Saxony-Anhalt continues its leadership in renewable energy expansion. Municipalities stand to gain financially and can invest in local projects or participate independently in the energy market. The state's commitment to sustainable energy is set to benefit both residents and businesses.
